In my experience, life in Trondheim was greatly enhanced by learning any amount of Norwegian.
People I knew were able to study and socialise very successfully without knowing any Norwegian, however the more you know the more you can learn and the more you will be able to get to know Norwegian people. Not to mention understanding everything around you.

There are several ways to improve you Norwegian:

Do the intensive summer course - this has the benefit of being very social and not eating into your semester studies

Do a language course during semester - a slower pace but a bona fide course with homework and exams - it does use up credits (30 ECTS credits per full time semester) which could be used to study other stuff however so probably only do it if you're more of a linguist than me (not hard)!

Do the survival course during semester - a short and informal course that gives you a good start

Teach yourself - talk in Norwegian, look up words, self study etc.

Norword - a lesson a day to your email inbox. link
