When I did this we had two simple projects in one semester - the first was to design a box to store a mayor's chain and was taken to concept proposal stage. One design was selected to produce, while the reset of the class went on to design handrails.
The idea is to design using wood, but there wasn't really much technical guidance on this. Its more down to your own research and talking to the teacher, Jon. If you ask the right questions i guess you'll get the answers you are looking for.
In the first weeks we did a cool field trip, travelling quite far west over 3 days to look at various wood realted manufacturers. I got to see some more of Norway than I would otherwise and have a laugh with the other people on the course, many of whom seemed to be architecture students.
Overall, the course was rewarding in that I got to experiment with ideas without thinking too much about viability and I got to spend lots of time in the great workshop. The course definately lacks in useful directed tuition however - its more valuable as a way to pursue your own ideas and to try a less strict design process. There are no mid process deadlines and weekly round table meetings to discuss everyone's individual progress.
