Travel to/from Trondheim

Experience/opinions on travel from the UK to Trondheim and vice versa

In response mainly to Alex's questions...

Flights to Trondheim will probably entail two legs and you can either try and get a flight to Trondheim via Amsterdam or elsewhere or get yourself to Oslo or Sandefjord and then travel domestically by air, bus or train. The latter is what I generally did, being the cheaper option at shorter notice.

By far the cheapest flights to Norway are those run by Ryanair between Oslo Torp and Stansted or Prestwick. Oslo Torp is in fact in the town of Sandefjord which is a 2hour and i think 100NOK bus journey from Oslo.
However, I was shocked by the low baggage allowance given by Ryanair - only 15kg! So if you have all your baggage for the year with you, you will have to pay excess at £4 per kilo. This may still turn out to be cheaper than the next best alternative which I think is flying KLM via Amsterdam. You could get a single with KLM for £120 or so and the bonus is you get a more comfortable flight than ryanair!

Travel from Oslo or Sandefjord to Trondheim:

From Oslo you can get a bus or train to Trondheim, or fly. Bus and train journeys will last in the region of 10 hours, the bus costing around 250NOK and the train either 320NOK (you want a student ticket, 'green' if you can get it) OR 150NOK if you manage to get one of the quota of cheap as chips 'minipris' tickets - these must be booked well in advance. The train operator is www.nsb.no - look out for the english button on the website to make things easier. The bus operator is www.nor-way.no i think.

Alternatively, there are flights from Torp (Sandefjord) or Oslo to Trondheim but i am unsure of the prices or availability. The domestic operators you should be looking at are www.wideroe.no (student tickets from 500NOK) , www.norwegian.no, www.braathens.no or www.sas.no (generally more expensive).

Flights are best booked in advance, buses and trains can be bought at departure (unless you want the cheapest train fare - then book it in advance)
